August 17, 1997

It's Sunday morning (almost noon). All writing activities this weekend, to date, have been spent in bringing chapters 10-14 of Gene Spliceup to date with the new storyline. I have no idea how large this thing has grown, but it's definitely expanding! I'll try to add up the word count in a few days and will report it here for anyone who is actually interested.

I have managed to get about a third of the way into chapter 15, so I guess some forward progress has been made. However, it's obvious the whole thing isn't going to be done this weekend as I had wanted it to be.

On the rejection/acceptance front, August is turning into Death Valley. Seriously. I've only had a single rejection in 17 days. I was averaging 9 or so a month until August, but now things are really drying up. Is it just me? Did I forget my deodorant again?

In the meantime, I've had a seriously interesting discussion on the SFF Net newsgroups about rejections and what they mean. My opinion: They mean your story wasn't good enough. Period.

Of course, there are several ways you can take this, and several things that go into the assessment as to whether your story is "good enough" or not...even things that are outside the scope of the actual quality of your story. Hey, being a newcomer is a crappy game, but if it's the only one in town, then you've got to play it.

     Anyway, enough rambling for now.
