From San Antonio Worldcon
August 26, 1997

Writing from San Antonio, now. It's been a great trip so far.

     Long post warning!

We dropped our daughter off with Papa and Mingo (see my family album for the straight scoop on who that is, if you're interested). Then Saturday, we drove down to Memphis, Tennessee. Saturday night was spent on Beale Street, where Lisa bought a couple sweatshirts, and where we stopped in at a hole-in-the wall dive for some of the best bar-b-que ribs I can remember tasting. The place was really alive, kids tap dancing in the street, blues playing from all the bars and being piped into the street. It was a warm night, and we really had a great time.

     Then we did Graceland.

I have to admit, I've never been a real "fan" of Elvis Presley. Yes, I like his music, and his voice was great. But I jst never got into that "King" thing, you know? But I am shocked to tell you that Graceland is a wonderful place. Both Lisa and I agreed that we left there with a much improved visionof who Elvis was. In my case, I'm carrying around a little tinge of guilt for my previous callousness in regard to Elvis. I guesee you have to be there in order to really understand it, but my first memory of the place were some of his home movies...which may tell you something.

Sunday we stayed in Texarkana, Arkansas. The less said the better.

San Antonio is beautiful...at least the part we've seen. We're downtown right on the Riverwalk. The food has been good, the environment safe and very pleasant. Monday night we walked the river and ate mexican. Tuesday morning we did the Alamo, which is a subtly moving place. We stood in the building where the last of the fortress defenders made their stand, and looked at the ground defended by Davy Crokett's Tennessee volunteers. We saw the ring Colonel Travis gave to the little girl. Very interesting place.

Then we did lunch and had a river tour. Capped the afternoon off by seeing "Men in Black", a movie we've both wanted to see, but never had the opportunity.

Now we're just waiting to get hungry again so we can go to eat!

And Worldcon hasn't even started yet!
