Praise Lisa
September 6, 1997

The next Novel Dare is set for November of this year. Lisa Silverthorne and I will be reprising our struggles of this February, and we'll see if we can rope a couple more Fishers 5 members into it. I'm really looking forward to doing this again. I learned a lot last time.

Lisa (my wife) has had a great couple days. Ballantine has given her a fantasy novel to copyedit . . . very cool. In addition, she's received a wonderful letter from one of the authors she worked with earlier, indicating what a great job she had done and thanking her for "making me look smarter than I really am."

She's walking on air this week, and I'm very proud of her.

My writing blood is pumping vigorously after Worldcon, but I'm finding it a bit difficult to get back into my normal cycle. Getting up at 4:00 takes a little resolve, and I haven't quite defeated that voice that tells me I should sleep a little longer. I've managed only an hour or so each of the last two mornings, and those have primarily been spent on business things related to Worldcon contacts . . . you know, submittals and the agent thing.

Today I got up and watched a bit of Diana's funeral. The scenes of the people outside were terribly moving, and Diana's brother gave what had to be the most incredibly difficult speech of the day. I was surprised by how well Elton John's new version of "Candle in the Wind" played (I was afraid it would be a bit inapproriate given its MM roots, but "Goodbye English Rose" worked for me). I am still enthralled by this event.

Will go to Louisville today to see if my beloved football Cardinals can manage to win a game this year. Tomorrow I cut the grass and focus on a short story for the group (which meets next Sunday). I'll spend as much of next week as necessary on Gene Splice, then turn my focus to three or four short stories that have been languishing in my "To revise" box for over a month.
