Lisa and I went to Columbus, Ohio for the weekend to attend Context. It's a small and generally well-run convention that is dedicated to the written SF/F word. I must say that I had an awfully great time.

First and foremost, I could listen to David Brin talk about writing for a very long time and not get bored. He has a wonderful outlook. Beyond that, I touched bases with John Douglas once again, and had a great panel with Gene Wolfe (who seemed to agree that I don't need an agent, but that I'm getting close).

The panels were interesting--far removed from the usual vanilla discussions one often finds at them. Listening to Gene Wolfe and John Douglas discuss ethics of the business was more than intriguing. And the show on the hubble telescope was sincerely impressive. I was especially surprised to enjoy listening to John Ordover discuss Star Trek books at length. I'm not much on the idea of media tie-ins.

I spent the greater part of Sunday in the Writer's workshop, and even gave a brainstorming exercise on plotting that was focused on the Barry Longyear-based lessons I've taught myself. (Any Workshoppers reading this...get thee hence and buy that book!) Several spoke to me later and actually said they enjoyed it, so I guess I must not have stank the place up too badly.

Overall, it was a really good convention--despite the five hours plus we had to drive to get there and back.
