My daughter Has a Tattoo
December 5, 1997

Ron's Recommendation
Read "Reflections on Life and Death"
by Kristine Kathryn Rusch in the January issue of Asimov's

     My daughter has a tattoo.

Actually, she has 24 tattoos scattered all over her body. It all started on Halloween when she received a package of spooky (thank goodness) temporary tattoos in a goodie bag. Rather than use a few and let them become clutter, as she usually does, Brigid waited until two days ago and put them all over her body. That's right, 24 tattoos of ghosts and skeletons and black widows. Three are even on her face. She went to school with them.

It's quite a sight. If I had a digital camera handy, I would show them to you.

Of course, they don't come off nearly as easily as they go on!

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not against tats. I just wasn't expecting to come home to find the illustrated girl in my basement!

On the writing front, I've spent the morning preparing manuscripts for the transom. I had let this task go while I was doing the Dare, so I've got something in the order of 15 tales to get back into the mail. That's over half the inventory I currently consider of publishable quality!

I've also been updating my Accept-O-Matic quietly (i.e. without necessarily reporting them fully here), so I thought I might share a few of the items I received last month.

"Lingering Scent of Lightning" came back from Pirate Writings in 13 days
"Summer's Promise" came back from Whispering Willows in 108 days
"Father's Day" came back from SF Age in 17 days
"A Place to Call Home" came back from Realms of Fantasy in 18 days
"Schrodinger's Soldier" came back from Writers of the Future in 150 days
"Filling Voids" came back from F&SF (didn't capture the turn around)
"The Train of Secrets" came back from Non-Stop in 377 days
"Landing Calypso" came back from Aboriginal in 86 days
"Drops of Blood..." came back from TomorrowSF in 33 days

And that should take me to a total of 87 rejections for the year. I'm nearing the 300 mark lifetime (my records are a little murky here, so I may actually be beyond that milestone--but who's counting, eh?)

Life is certainly grand for a new writer.

     See ya tomorrow.
