I cracked the 90 rejection barrier yesterday with another bounce from Absolute Magnitude. It doesn't look like this year will be quite up to par with last year's 100 rejections. Oh, well. Has anyone else noticed magazines' propensity for holding onto stories longer these days? At least in the small press?

Seriously, For most of the year, I've generally had 4-6 stories at any one time on my "out in the mail for over 250 days" list, and with the exception of Starlight (which said they were going to be very slow from the beginning) they are all small press. The big four are generally 60-90 days. I should note here, just in case I'm inadvertently leaving the wrong impression, that Warren Lapine of Absolute Magnitue has always been rapid in his turn around and seems like a very writer friendly editor. This last rejection was well under 20 days in the queue.

Anyway ... Christmas closes in. I'm getting caught up on my reading--I'm all the way through SF Age and F&SF, up to the last issue of Asimov's, and ready to plow into Analog. Writing is progressing slowly, but should pick up over the holidays.
