Writing Resolutions
January 1, 1998

Resolutions, Predictions, and a Smattering of Opinion

As the reader is my boss:

- I resolve to be proud of each story I submit lest the reader find them unsatisfying
- I resolve to develop a stronger understanding of story so as to better entertain the reader
- I resolve to be discerning, to put myself in the place of the reader

As the character is my friend:

- I will give her heart and soul without judgment
- I will take joy in mere fact of his existence

As editors are real people, too:

- I will treat each editor as if they were my mother or father
- I will not be afraid of them, though they appear to hold my future in their hands
- I will not be bitter, though they hold my manuscripts for too long
- I will remember they want to read good material as much as I want to write it

As I am only human:

- I will work as hard as I can
- I will wear my thickest skin
- I will be persistent
- I will enjoy myself, for it is the reason I write

As for the predictions, well, here be a few.
1) A writer I know will place herself on the preliminary Nebula ballot. 2) I'll submit a lot of stories. 3) I'll sell more stories this year than any other . . . 4) . . . yet I'll still near the 400 rejection barrier 5) I'll bring two novels that I am very proud of to market 6) Other new writers will make great strides in thier careers 7) I'll try not to be jealous! 8) Worldcon will be great fun 9) I'll come through the year knowing a lot more than I do now
Happy new year, folks. Let's go make something of it!
