I completed the first draft of the gangster thing this morning (if anything can really be considered a first draft in this day and age of the computer). After all my whining, and with the acknowledgement that I need to work on the details a bit more, I find that I actually like it now. I'm also pleased with the way I've managed to get through this portion of the effort. It's easy to get down when things aren't flowing rapidly--and I did get a little disgruntled at times. But I kept my chin up for the most part, and kept telling myself I could do it.

You're a writer, Ron--I said--you'll do fine.

Or, as a friend of mine used to say, "fake it till you make it."

A positive attitude is sometimes the most important item in a new writer's arsenal. Certainly it can be overdone--nothing is worse than a blabbermouth who can't put up the goods. But in a business where every iota of progress comes at a seemingly exhaustive cost, and where the attitude you start with can make such an impression on the eventual results, letting loose of the sandbags is sometimes the most important part of the journey.

In other news, I received a rejection from Worlds of Fantasy and Horror today. And we finally saw Titanic this last weekend. I think we were about the last people on the face of the earth to see it, so I can now finally join in on all the hallway conversations about it. We enjoyed it immensly, and I hope it does well in all the awards. I have to admit that it pulled at my emotions (how could it not, eh?), and it was easily worth seeing. But in the final analysis it didn't live up to the huge expectations I had envisioned for it after all the hype.

Oh, well. I guess I'll consider it the price of waiting so long to see it.

I did think the special effects were wonderfully done, also.

Anyway, have a great day tomorrow.

     See you in the morning!
