Maybe a Writing Vacation?
June 2, 1998 6:13 a.m.
Okay, as those of you who came in the front door can tell, I've been playing with the photoediting tools again. Afterall, it's not like I don't have unlimited time [sheepish grin].

On the writing front, I did manage to mail away a couple stories and I've completely combed through the Europa story. I've got another short tale I need to finish up here rapidly (shouldn't be a major problem), and then we're setting our sites on a small vacation to Mammoth Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It should really be a blast.

Speaking of vacations, I'm seriously contemplating a vacation from writing. As the Mammoth Cave thing draws nearer, it's made me realize that I really haven't taken any time off from my "writing job" for quite a long time. Yes, I've had days where I didn't write anything, but mentally I was still a writer on those days, you know. It's like on the weekend, I still work for the company, but when you're on vacation you don't work for anyone . . . if that makes sense.

So I have started to look ahead on the calendar with thoughts toward taking two weeks off to focus on other things and let the writing energies recharge. I know I'm on the right track because as soon as the thought struck me I felt a huge surge of comfort, you know, that feeling you get when you suddenly realize you're going to be about three weeks late on a project and your boss shows up and says they won't be ready to accept your delivery for another month.

I know I can keep going, but I'll do a better job in the long run if I rest a bit.

Who knows. Maybe I'll change my mind in a bit, but that's what I'm planning right now. The quotation I picked for the sidebar got me to thinking, though . . . at least I've got the option to consider a break, right? Another little moment where I realize just how fortunate this struggling writer really is.

Anyway, I've got a few more things to do this morning, so I'll stop here. Have a great day, and take care of yourself!
