Listening to James Taylor today.

Let's see . . . the Writers of the Future banquet will be the 22nd of Augst, with the workshop filling up the week before that, so my August will consist of Rivercon, Worldcon, then WotF. It's going to be a busy time, eh?

Ever wonder why certain things always seem to happen to you. My example today is the story I wrote with Martin Crumpton. We spent a long time writing the first draft, then another month writing the latest (at the request of an editor). It's been at the magazine for nearly two months now, and I happen to know that it is the oldest story the editor still has on his desk (i.e. everything they've received earlier than this one has been processed).

Not complaining, though. Not really.

It's just another one of those things that build up to make up the regular, everyday friction of being a new writer.

But yesterday was a great day. It was a day that saw me get a final hold on the Europa story--I'm liking it more each day now, a good sign. It was a day that saw some progress at work. It was a day that I finally got to read "Kin to Crows" by Applebee's buddy Christopher Rowe (you had to be there) in the June issue of Realms of Fantasy. It's a fine story with strongly drawn characters and an eerie plotline. Very enjoyable.

And yesterday I got to go on a date with my daughter. We had pizza. And we took a walk in the park (we talked about fish and we played follow the leader . . . she led). And we had ice cream. When we got home, Brigid wrote a graphical story. Seven of eight panels, a comic book with no words. She "read" it to me as her bedtime story.

Her voice filled with excitement as she told the story that went with the pictures. She was proud of the story. Happy with herself. Pleased merely to have created something, and having a great time showing it off. She felt just as I do when things go well.

Have a great day.
