Cal Ripken

Cal Ripken's streak came to an end yesterday.

The opposing team gave him a standing ovation.

People talk to me about how dedicated I am, getting up when I get up and working a job while writing. Keeping my family life full. And I am dedicated, I won't argue with that. I'm proud of it, too.

Maybe that's why I felt such an interesting tug on my heart when I saw the headline that said Cal Ripken sat out a game. It's not that big of a deal in the cosmic range of things. But Cal Ripken came to work every day. He performed through good streaks and bad, hobbling when he was hurt and flying high through the good streaks.

There are heroes in today's world. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But you have to look for them. You have to root for them. After all, how is a hero a hero until until someone pays attention?

Cal Ripken is a role model I look up to.

I mention it because I didn't realize this fact until this morning. And at the same time I feel uplifted by his feat, I feel a tinge of guilt for not fully realizing the power of what he was doing while he did it.

Go out and find a hero today, okay? And if that hero turns out to be someone you know, why not tell them?

"The streak ended the way it should have ended in that it ended on his terms. We knew it wasn't going to end with an injury because Cal Ripken has played through injuries that no one on Earth has ever played through."
