... Ron vs. Counter-Ron ...
February 3, 1999 6:02 a.m.
Wednesday, and I'm still caffeine-free.

It's been a good morning. Three manuscripts sit on my desk, ready for mailing this afternoon. I've gone through another draft of the story from LA, which I've titled "Goliath's Sling". Sent a few e-mails, caught up on my submission records, and generally been quite active. It's been a good few days.

Momentum is important.

I've been dragging a little, what with being sick and with most of the stuff I've got going on at work being long-term studies. I like to see things move. And when I don't see physical progress, I can get myself into a funk every now and again.

I friend of mine from a few years back used to say "There's times where you just have to fake it until you make it." And I think that's right. I haven't felt like I've been doing very good work--and I probably haven't, for all the reasons I've mentioned and maybe a few more. But attitude is so important. Bad attitude, bad work. Good attitude, good work. Pretty simple equation, eh?

A few days ago, I took myself aside and said "Ron, if you're going to get anything accomplished, it's up to you to make it happen."

"But I don't feel like doing anything--besides, I suck," the counter-Ron replied.

"Just do it."

"You stole that from Nike, you know? You're just not very original these days."

I pointed myself to the desk, and pushed counter-Ron to the back corner of my mind. I grabbed something I knew could be successful--the story from LA--and I pushed on it. Low and behold, it moved. Yeah, I've still got a ton of micro-writing to fix up, but that's the "easy" part. Now I've got stuff ready to go, stories working, and things moving.

I feel better.

And I haven't seen counter-Ron for days.

Have a great day.
