... business ...
April 14, 1999 6:29 a.m.
This was a "business' morning--meaning that I spent most of it updating status and getting a couple manuscripts ready to mail. As busy as I've been, there are a stack of stories piling up behind me, and I wanted to get a clearer view of what I needed to get done.

Lots of good stuff going on over at Tamela's site again in regard to my idea generator. We've had a little e-mail conversation on it, but I think it work's out better to put stuff here. It fits the whole intent of the exercise, anyway.

Let me say that I highly respect Tamela's opinions here. While "new" to the field of SF, she's an award winning author, and a person who works awfully hard. And she's a nice person to boot! And I'm the last one that should be able to say anyone must work my way. Heck, I use a different process for every story! I certainly don't use images to push a lot of my ideas, and they won't even be the media of all my idea generators. But they are particularly suited to the Web environment, and will likely augment most of what I do here.

Personally, I think it's pretty cool that someone actually knew what was going on in the image I chose for this exercise.

Tamela said she doesn't really get into exercises. And to be completely honest, I really don't either. I don't like the word "exercise," in association with anything writing related. That's why I chose "Idea Generator". People can use it as an exercise, if that helps them, but my intention when I sit down to write is to make a story that's going to market.

No exercising here. :)

I know Tamela was primarily just commenting on the image, so I'm not trying to make a mountain of that anthill. But her comments have gotten me to thinking about why "exercises" are viewed as they are, and I'm wondering if that's a bit of Tamela's discomfort with them--that they don't feel "real."

Guess I'll have to check out her site tomorrow to find out!

Thanks for your e-mail in regard to stories started/finished due to the generator. I'll see if I can come up with something even more challenging next Friday.

[grinning evilly and twisting my fake handlebar mustache]

Have a good day!
