Five Days
April 9, 2000
8:20 a.m.

I was sitting at my desk at work, listening to music. A guy came into my office to talk about something he was working on. As is polite, I set my headphones aside and focused my attention on him.

"I see you're listening to music on your slidy thing," he said with a smile a mile wide.

It's been a busy five days since the last update. Many apologies to those I've left hanging and waiting.

Yes, I'm writing, and I'm getting a few things done. I'm feeling kinda okay about it, too, which is good. Being tired and strung out all the time has a scary edge to it that I don't want to examine too closely.

I'm preparing to write a sequel to "The Taranth Stone" (which, in turn, is a sequel to "Stealing the Sun") so I took advantage of some time at the library to pick up an armload of science books. I sat on the couch a big chunk of the day yesterday just browsing. That's one of the fun things about being a science fiction writer ... you have a built in excuse to browse, to find something interesting, and to focus on it for no other reason than you think it migh tbe worthwhile to you somewhere.

While we were at LA for the WotF gig, Tim Powers said that was his basic methodology for how he came up with stories. He reads and reads, and everytime he finds somehting so cool it has to be in the book he sets it aside. Once he's got a decent pile, he orders them all around until they make a framework, then he writes it all up and collects all those awards.

Okay ... I added the awards part.

In particular I paid a lot of attention to a section on the politics between the Rockefellers and the Carnegies when it came to how funding was procured for the Palomar telescope.

Some things will never change, you know?

But mostly I've spent these last five days learning new stuff for work and modifying my site and all that. The world of Perl is many splendored ... so, be prepared. It may still be a few days, or maybe even a few weeks before you see anything new released. But I think you'll like it when it comes out. I'm constantly fighting the urge to put stuff up before it's really ready...

Dontcha hate it when that happens?

I also received the galleys for "The In-betweeners," a strange little fantasy I wrote with four other writers. Looks like it will be out on CD sometime soon. The beat goes on, right?

     And finally ...

Pamie posted this on squishy a couple days ago, and I thought it was great. Since I figured I might have a few folks reading Daily Persistence that don't read her page, I'll post it here. It made my day.

Where's your brain, man?
