It was the best of mornings, it was the worst of mornings.

Not much time left today, so I'll be brief. Bottom line, I threw out half of what I wrote yesterday and started afresh. The new stuff worked, kind of, but didn't leave me thrilled. I was feeling a bit ... shall we say ... pissy. So, I asked myself: "Self, what is this story about?"

That's when the last domino fell.

I know the story--the real story, I think, not just another in a line of drafts whose purpose is to teach me something. Now it's just a matter of turning the crank and making it happen on the page.

Now for the really good stuff.

You know all that preliminary work I've been discussing lately? The extra drafts, the fiddling, the fidgeting, the playing with characters that aren't going into the story--all those immersionary tactics? (BTW, I now claim "immersionary" to be a formal word, even if it doesn't show up in the dictionary). The best part is that once this domino fell, a bunch of others did, too. I've got a pair of stories ready, now. I think! A pair that should merge well and that should play off each other's strengths.

Sometimes you just gotta love it.
