Wake Up Call
June 28, 2000
6:22 a.m.

We had no fun this morning.

The first problem I noticed with this morning was that it started at something past three o'clock when Lisa woke up to the sound of a bleating alarm. I, of course, was still in obliviousland--being capable of sleeping through a stampede of buffalo if necessary. Somehow, though, Lisa managed to dynamite me out of bed.

Turns out it was the warning system on the downstairs plumbing. A drainpipe is apparently backed up once again and the nightly operation of the water softener unit was spewing water over our basement floor. So I stopped the softener unit, and we grabbed a pair of sponge mops and made like a couple of swabbies.

Throughout it all, Lisa tried to see the positives. She said things like: "Well, it could have happened last week while we were gone, then this stuff would just be standing for a week" and "At least we caught it early." All-in-all she was downright philosophical about the hole thing.

I, however, was not in the mood for such banter, seeing as it was three blanking thirty in the morning. There is no joy like moping your basement floor at 3:30 in the morning. But we worked at it, and about an hour and a half later we got it all sopped up.

"I've got blisters," Lisa said as we washed our hands together in the kitchen.

     I chuckled.

"No, I'm serious, I've got blisters from moping." She held out her hand. Sure enough, three blisters.

"Ouch." I'm sure my reply made her fell much better. "I'm having breakfast."

Lisa looked at the clock and saw it was nearing 5:00. "Guess it's that time, huh?"

"Yep." I reached for the cereal.

     "I'm going back to bed."

She gave me a good morning kiss, and trudged away. I turned to fix my breakfast and start the day.

Managed about 500 words on the story. The middle is shaping up well. Hate the micro writing right now, but that can always be fixed later.

     First goal--capture the story.

     Have a great day.

Pretty soon you'll be comparing it to "The Old Man and the Sea" ...
