Governed by Me

Made good progress on the story I'm working on. Of course, it still needs a title.

     I hate titles.

Either they come right away, and help hold the storytelling process together, or they fall out of the end product. Mine tend to fall out of the end product, which is fine all-in-all but tends to make me feel queasy throughout the entire process. I'm required to have confidence and all that, maybe a lot like the ceramic artist who only gets to see the end product in all its glory after his piece has been fired. Until then, he goops drab paint all over his greenware in hopes that the vision of what he's shooting for will actually pan out and the kiln will give him the gorgeous piece he's expecting.

The major difference here is that the process the ceramic artist is relying on is one controlled by the physics of chemistry. His firing is, within various tolerances, repeatable and dependable. His process is governed by known science.

Mine is ... well ... governed by me--who has been dependable in the past, but whose continued reliability requires an occasionally long leap of faith to believe in.

Anyway, now that the basic structure of the story is together, I've returned to creation of words. Had to throw away a few bits from earlier that no longer quite fit. But I'm pleased with where it's going. Maybe I'll have the draft done in another day or two.

     Who knows?

Maybe the title will appear then.

I read Jack Dann's "Marilyn" in August's F&SF. Very nice.

Yeah, this one's quick. Consider it my attempt to let you get away into a longer weekend.

     Have a very good one.
