A Bit of History
July 25, 2000 7:47 a.m.
I went over to Charles Eckert's place over the weekend. Due to family changes, he's now moving, and downsizing. What this meant is that he's got a bunch of stuff that he isn't going to have room for, and he wanted to a) get rid of it, and b) see that some of it went to a home that would properly cherish it.

For example, a vast collection of Analog, F&SF, and a few Asimov's from distant years.

I came home with two large piles of magazines, and a couple paperbacks -- mostly collections. Lisa looked at my treasure pile, and did her best not to roll her eyes. She was a real trooper. [grin] I sat up in the living room and sorted the piles, occasionally glancing at tables of contents to scan names. Lucius Shepard is one of our finest new writers the blurb over one F&SF story said.

Will I get to read them all?

Hmmm...

I think so. Or at least scan through each of them.

But that's not really why I decided to take them all. I decided to take them all because they represent history in the field I want to work in. As soon as I saw them, it felt right to want to have them. I'm new to the field, you see? Yes, I read SF like mad when I was a kid, but I let it drop for ten years, and I've constantly felt a struggle to get closer to the field, to be an inside rather than a distant relative. It's a feeling that's hard to shake, even if it isn't totally true.

So these magazines make me feel better.

I've already picked through a few, and I've started reading an Ellison collection.

Just one more thing to fill my day, you know?

Have a great day.
