Maybe it's a Sign

So I was looking through Locus the other day, and I saw a review of Jane Yolen's new collection "Sister Emily's Lightship and Other Stories" (Tor 0-312-87278-6, $22.95, 300 pp, hc) July 2000. This was not the big deal. The mere fact that Jane Yolen was being reviewed in Locus was not a big deal, either, seeing as she's written some 6 billion books by now, I'm sure (and they complain when I do a simple Dare!). But what was a big deal was the line that followed.

     Cover by Brigid Collins.

It took me by total surprise and sent a little tingle down my spine. Cover by Brigid Collins.

I went stomping into the living room, where Brigid was reading.

     "Brigid," I said coldly.

She looked up and tried to decide whether she should be serious or whether she should smile. It's interesting, looking back, seeing how your own child reacts to the parental power that you have and wondering how your own parents managed to do things with a straight face sometimes.

"What is this relationship you have going with Jane Yolen?" I said.

     "What?"

So I showed her the review.

"You're doing Jane Yolen's stories, and you've never even offered to illustrate one of mine."

So she and I and Lisa talked about how weird it was to see your own name, and your daughter's name, in print like that. Later, I got on the Internet and searched for more of this new Brigid Collins's work. "Cool," Brigid finally said. "Maybe it's a sign. Maybe I'll be an artist."

"Maybe," I said. "But if you do become an artist, you had better illustrate my stories!"

Brigid rolled her eyes. "We'll see, Daddy." And she walked up stairs to get back to her reading.

     Have a great day.
