Everything is Relatives
August 28, 2000
7:44 a.m.

"E=Mc2. What does that mean?" Brigid asked from the back seat.

"Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared," I replied, driving. Lisa was in the seat beside me--standard configuration.

     "Oh."

     "Everything is relatives, you know?"

     "What?"

"Relatives. Like that Einstein guy said. The guy that said we're all relatives."

     "We can't all be relatives."

"Why not? That's what Alfred said."

     "Alfred?"

"Yeah, Alfred Einstein. You know. Relatives."

     "That's Albert."

     "Whatever."

     "You are so dumb."

"I am so smart," I replied.

     "You are littleus brainius."

"That's where you would be wrong!" I cried, lifting an index finger to make my point.

"No, Daddy. That's where I would be right," she replied smugly.

"You are just proving my point over and over again, Brigid. I am so on a higher plane of thought than anyone else that sometimes even I can only tell what I'm thinking for brief, shining moments during my most lucid times."

     "Huh?"

"See," I replied. "I am so smart, you can't figure out what I said."

     "Yeah, right. Littleus brainius."

"Dear," Lisa said calmly. "You might want to get in the other lane."

     I smiled and moved over.

"It's not my fault that all those lucid moments are at 1:00 in the morning."

"Right -- when you're asleep," Brigid said.

"That's the difference between Albert Einstein and me, I guess."

     "What's that," Lisa asked.

"Albert Einstein could stay up until 1:00 in the morning."

"You can stay up that late, too, Daddy."

"Yeah, but then I can't think straight."

     "You're so dumb, Daddy."

     "No, Brigid. I'm so smart."

     "Littleus brainius."

     "Biggus Brainius."

     Have a great day.
