the Last CONversation
September 6, 2000 7:40 a.m.
Lisa and I were walking away from what would be our last party of the convention when we ran into Adrienne Gormley. We know Adrienne from my days with the IMPS. She had been telling me that she had a copy of the October Analog that she wanted me to sign, and this time, she actually had it on her possession. So I signed it, and we chatted a bit.

I was tired, and ready to call it a night.

I don't remember exactly how it came about, but suddenly Robert Silverberg was standing beside us and holding the copy. "Look at that," he said, leafing through the pages. "A copy of Analog Magazine with your name on the cover. I'll bet that feels really good." And he smiled with his big Robert Silverberg beard bending at the corners.

We talked for a while longer, including a discussion about copy editors that I'm sure made Lisa a bit less than comfortable--Mr. Silverberg has seen his share of poor copy editing, I'm more than certain. And in the end we walked away from the convention with our last conversation being one that included one of the true greats in the field.

It wasn't until I was sitting in the hotel room that I realized I missed the opportunity to have him sign the copy of Asimov's I had in my hand.

A couple quick things:

1. More progress on the story I spoke of yesterday. With a little luck the first draft will be done tomorrow. More likely Thursday, though.

2. I've come to notice that my reading material is once again ... er ... backed up.

3. I don't know how you are. But I am one of those people who is most productive when I've got a thousand things on my plate.
