The Ever Expanding Universe

Okay, I missed my estimate by a little. Friday I said I was a few hundred words away from writing "The End" onto the story I'm working on. I guess that's fair, so long as you're willing to push the envelop on what you mean by "few." Last week I thought it was going to be a 5,000 word thing.

Then we went to Louisville for a wedding, and my Dad's birthday.

Didn't write a thing Saturday and Sunday.

So, when I sat down this morning, imagine my surprise when I discovered another character had a bit to say about this story. I considered shutting her down--but then realized I liked what she was trying to do. So I let her run this morning. It's expanded to nearly 7,000 words.

Proof that we live in an ever-expanding universe?

I know there are a lot of writers who say they let their characters run often, and that this is the charm of the process for them. I understand why they say that. It's a lot of fun to see where something is going to go, to feel dissociated from the process and just watch. But at the same time, it's pretty weird. I don't often find that I keep much of anything when I let characters run like this. But this morning was pretty good.

     I like where it went.

Now I think I'm a few hundred words from THE END.

     Have a great day.
