Draft 2
October 3, 2000
7:30 a.m.

The second draft of The Story is complete. I think it works moderately well, and I learned something more about it in this pass. I may even have a title for it.

     Still playing with that.

Titles are interesting. Of course, they need to be valuable to the story. The words of the title are perhaps the most valuable words of any story. I think this is why I have a hard time with them. You see, my stories move a little in the making. Yes, I generally know what is going to happen, and I generally know who the characters are at the start of my story, and how they are going to react to the events of a story.

But I often don't know what they are going to learn from that story until the story is done. And I may not know what tiny thing is going to trigger that lesson. And for me, these are things that are key to a good title. These are things that the title should hint at.

So, I've got my story. And I think I've got my title. We'll let it settle a little to see if it holds age well.

One more pass, and it'll be ready to read.

Overall, it's a good day at the keyboard.

     Have a great day.
