The Long and Winding Road
October 23, 2000 6:59 a.m.
No way would I pay long distance rates to update my site from Cookeville, Tennessee. Sorry.

In the end, I guess it wouldn't have really mattered. I was there to teach a three day class (went a day early--Tuesday--to set up, and got back a day later--Saturday--because it's a long drive!). I planned to write a bit, and to do a bunch of reading. But in the end, I'll admit I didn't get as much of either of these things done as I had planned.

Instructing all-day classes is very tiring. You have to think all the time, and be on your toes, and just generally concentrate. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cry me a river, I know. Anyway. If I had updated, it probably would have been the mindless drivel of the seriously loony.

[No heckling from the back row on that ... ]

I swear, though, it was really tiring. Looking on the positive, taking a step back from the keyboard was a good thing for me. I have a tendency to augur into the ground at times. And taking three days to do nothing but interact with people and two days to sit in quiet contemplation while fall landscape slid by was almost certainly a blessing in not so subtle disguise.

I took the windy country roads, rather than the wide interstates.

Tennessee is absolutely gorgeous this time of year.

I'm still waiting a couple inputs on the experiment, and will post bits of my analysis because I think you'll find it interesting. Yes, I think there were two or three things in particular that I have learned from this exercise. Stay tuned.

While I was gone, I received news that Larry Segriff, who is editing an anthology titled "Silicon Dreams" with Marty Greenberg, has accepted a story of mine titled "K-232." I'm not sure exactly when it will be printed, but I signed the contract this morning and sent it back. Now I have to update the site a bit.

Darn. [grin]

I also signed an invoice for sciencefiction.pl for their use of "A Matter of Pride." And I got a couple stories ready for submission, and modified my submission trackers with information of the past week or so. I straightened a bit. So, finally, I'm pretty much ready for business again.

Have a great day.
