Writing Life

     Working on "Ghandi" this morning.

     I really like it.

Brigid came downstairs this morning. She doesn't do that often. She crawled up on my lap and we talked for a couple minutes. Today is her birthday. Twelve years ago at this time, she was about seven hours old.

I was going to write something about the process of writing this morning. But instead I decided that I wanted to capture what it means to hold your daughter at twelve years old and know that she's getting ready to meet the rest of the world. How it feels to know that there's really nothing that you can do to keep her from running into pitfalls and all that stuff. I wanted to say something about how it feels to teach her a song you and your brother wrote twenty or more years before, and how makes you smile to hear her play it on your old guitar. I wanted to say something about the sensation you get when you see her do something well, and you know that she knows it was good by that little look on her face.

     Life is life.

     Writing is writing.

Let the two intertwine as best you can--but know the difference.

     Have a great day.

Do something special today...
