Something for Everyone

I am struggling today with point of view.

"Searching for Ghandi" is still hanging around in that limbo stage between finished and drafty. Part of the issue is the point of view I've selected. It's very effective for the first half of the story, but doesn't do as well for the second half. So I'm experimenting today, and I'm sure I'll be experimenting tomorrow, too.

Such is life, eh?

Hope everyone had a great holiday. We spent a bunch of time down in Louisville with the parents, and had lots of food and conversation. My mom and I somehow managed to take 4 of 5 pinochle games from my Lisa and my dad, and somehow my mom beat Brigid and the rest of us in a game of Harry Potter trivia.

In between we watched election news, which continues to fascinate me. (Yes, call me a masochist). Let me be blunt. Anyone who takes up one party's mantra against the other is going blindly into that dark night. Neither of them believes what they are saying. I believe the Republicans have a slightly higher "ethical" position, but only because they are ahead in points and don't have to stretch as far.

Sorry to bog down in politics again.

Recommended reads:

S. N. Dyer's "Sunrise Blues" in the December F&SF is quite interesting from both a story and a structure point of view. I very much enjoyed it, and thought it an interesting way to tell a story from multiple viewpoints.

Allen Steele's "Stealing Alabama" in January's Asimov's is, as pretty much all his stuff, very entertaining. I find it difficult to put his work down.

And finally, Robert Reed's "Mirror" (also from the January Asimov's) is, I think, quite well done.

Have a great day.
