Working Through the Rubble

After two and a half days of work, I do believe the two most evil commands in the entire world are fdisk and format c: /s. If ever you get the idea that it might be a good idea to actually clean up that hard disk of yours, that it really shouldn't be that big of a deal, that you can handle it in an couple hours and be going right along ... well ... if ever this happens, just whack yourself right upside the head and put yourself out of your misery.

     Seriously.

One good blast between the eyeballs--right over the bridge of your nose--ought to do it. Don't fool around, either. Make it hard enough that you eyes water and your snot turns to water.

I'm serious, man. Just turn into the Anti-Nike guy.

That's all I've got to say about the past two days.

... except that I still can't get my danged address book and mail ported into the new Netscape. I've tried the red-blooded American way and just forged ahead. And I've scoured their site. And I've left e-mail. No response yet. But here's what I can tell so far.

     Get this. I mean. Seriously.

The new Netscape will apparently absorb old versions of Netscape address books and mail. But in order to do it (the best I can tell so far), you have to have exported the stuff while you had the old version available. This means, you can't just save the e-mail folders or the address book base file (as I had conscientiously spent 30 minutes or so Sunday doing). It means you apparently have to save the danged things in a different format. You guys probably already knew that, but count me among the bit-challenged folks who never thought that through.

I can't fathom why Netscape would do this-and I've been a pretty big Netscape follower for some time, so I'm not just griping for the sake of griping.

But if you think about this for a minute you'll see the paradox. I mean, you have to know you must export your mail before you kill the old browser--meaning you have to have downloaded the new browser, and actually tried to import the system prior to killing the old. Meaning an upgrade as part of a refresh, or as--say--part of getting a new computer, appears to be pretty danged impossible.

Maybe I'm just showing my ignorance.

If anyone has a clue, I'm all ears.

     Grr.

This is all I have to say about the last two and a half days.

     Have a great day.

Wasn't it fun, though?
