A Trip to the Bookstore
February 5, 2001 7:18 a.m.
I know Rob Vagle occasionally pokes his head in here, so I want to make sure I mention that I read his wonderful story in the latest issue of Realms of fantasy this weekend. "Messages" is a touching short piece about two kids, one who has to believe in magic, and the other who can't--or, at least, doesn't want to have to. It's a finely drawn piece that examines who we are. I'm not quite finished with entire magazine, yet, but it's by far my favorite piece so far.

Made some good progress over the weekend. Mostly on short stuff, again (dotting I's, crossing T's, building submittal packages, and all that other good stuff), but I did push the novel along a touch, also.

I had to laugh at myself.

We went to the bookstore Saturday afternoon--Borders for those of you who have to know. We were going to meet some friends of ours for dinner, and we went up just a little early. Usually when we go to a larger bookstore, we give ourselves a few hours to look around. It's a fun place, you know? Pick up a book, read it for fifteen minutes, pick up another.

This time, though, we only had forty-five minutes or an hour.

And I thought to myself as we walked in. "My God, how am I going to find anything in that tiny block of time."

So I picked up "Faster," a book by James Gleick (of "Chaos" fame) that discusses the modern rapidity of life in today's world.

Have a great day.

That's Okay, Ron. We laugh at you, too.
