Life is too Short
February 28, 2001
7:02 a.m.

Another day, another couple hundred words. I wanted to be past the chapter I'm working on by the end of February.

I'm not going to make it.

But life is too short to be grumpy all day, you know?

I saw where the votes were finally counted in Florida. Bush won. Surprise.

I wasn't going to say anything about that, but it's also silly season in SFWA--election time--and I figured if I was going to drag down an entry with election talk, I might as well go all the way.

     Anyway.

The message boards over at SFF.net are filled with discussion of platforms and complaints about past officers and accusations about current candidates. It's an interesting dynamic to watch each year as the entire organization uses these moments to indulge in cannibalistic enjoyment. SFWA is a pretty good organization, really. I enjoy being a part of it. It's just that it's made up of people with too much time on their hands.

I mean, geeze. Life is too short to wade through a couple hundred notes a day wherein person A complains that person B didn't hear them correctly, and if they did person B would certainly not have said such a dumb thing, and by the way, have you noticed the person B has only published in three places in their entire life, and doesn't that make person B a total idiot?

Signed, Totally in Control of Myself.

     SFWA politics--just say no.

There's a bird singing outside my window. It's sound is low and sweet and so very clear. I think there's a physical quality about the air in the morning that allows it to carry the full range of a bird's call.

They don't sound the same in the evenings. Have you ever noticed that?

     Have a great day.
