Day 15: Big Picture Problems
April 15, 2001 8:06 a.m.
6,100 words:

I've hit a place in the story where I've already done most of the work, so I would expect big numbers for the next few days. In the process of this morning's work, I've had a concern confirmed in that I know I need to go back into the last 20,000 words and add some more support structures for things that are happening now.

This is really a pretty easy call because I ran into several big-world/backfill events this morning that I had handled with simple exposition. All of these would be a lot more powerful if I stuck a scene or two in earlier to show the reader these things rather than just bringing them in as they are conveniently needed. Not only that, but I think doing this would serve to tell a secondary character's story more fully, also, and therefore make for a more satisfying book.

I'm torn, though, between going back now, or plowing through the parts that I've written, and then going back. My feeling is that I'll probably go on and plow ahead because then I'll be through everything, and have a total listing of areas I'm worried about. Then I can take a little time to go back and do the "rewrite" in what will hopefully be a single pass.

At least that's the plan.

We're heading to Louisville this morning to see my parents and my brother.

Have a great Easter.
