Nearing "The End"

I finished the first draft of a short story today. It's one that came to me in bits and pieces at the beginning of our trip. The SFnal idea came first--which is a little rare for me. I'm not saying the techy idea never comes first, but I generally start with a character, then find the problem, then the tech.

This time the idea came first, then the ending.

The character became obvious as soon as the ending appeared.

The rest of the story filled itself in during one very long, sleepless night. I almost got up and wrote it all down that night, but in the end I knew I wouldn't really lose the story since it was so firmly planted in my mind. So I've been writing it in little clumps of time in the mornings while waiting for Brigid to wake up. Having finished it, I see a flaw--not really in the "Story" element, but more in the overall validation of the piece. The rework will be minimal, I think. So I'll work on that a bit, and it will be ready for folks to read.

So it's been a nice vacation, all around, you know?

The beach, the sand, the sun, the ocean. While I was gone I won an award, [grin] and now I've "finished" a story.

Maybe I should plan two-week vacations more often, eh?

Tomorrow we pack up to return. Despite it all, it will be nice to get home.

     Have a great weekend.
