"Nevada!" Lisa said as we neared Louisville.

We were looking for license plates on the way home--Lisa and I, anyway...Brigid was busy reading or listening to Phantom of the Opera on her CD.

Yes, license plate gawking is an old-timey game and more than a bit on the side of cliché, but still, I found that once I had started, I really couldn't stop. Seriously. Isn't it cool to think about people from all over the place? I find it fascinating to see people from Colorado driving through West Virginia. Or people from Delaware in North Carolina. Or people from Texas all over the danged road.

Let me tell you, for a moderately small place, Maryland has a heck of a lot of people driving.

"Massachusetts!" I called while heading toward Columbus. I settled into my seat with some satisfaction. After two days of driving we had see pretty much everything we could see with the exception of Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts--not counting the northwest states. Now I could strike one of those off.

I can only surmise that there really are no people in Vermont and Rhode Island. (Yes, Caroline, I know you said you lived in Rhode Island, but after two days of nothing on the roads, do you actually expect me to believe that? I mean, this is America, after all).

In the end (and not counting Alaska and Hawaii) I think we missed Mississippi, Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Wyoming, and the Dakotas, too.

You can draw your own conclusions.

The mail was full of stuff.

First, I can announce that the "Land/Space Prairie" anthology has accepted "Learning the Language" for publication. They're still waiting for the final deal from the publisher, but it's apparently firm enough that they've put some money up. Checks are always good.

Also received the galleys for "Barnstorming," and responded this morning. Due to the vacation, I'm a shade late responding, so I hope they can handle my suggestions. If not ... well ... we do our best. And finally, I received my contributor's copies to "Echoes in a Shattering Silence" which is in the latest issue of Artemis. I'll put up a story page pertaining to it in a day or so.

All in all, I stand by my earlier comment. An award, a sale, a publication, and a new story--I'll have to go on vacation more often.

Have a great day.
