A Bit of Randomness

Both at work and at home, I use myYahoo as my Internet home page, and have "real-time" news headlines ported in every fifteen minutes. One of the feeds I use is ABC News. Here were the two "Top Headlines" from early yesterday:

          Aid Workers Savor Freedom
Meteorologists: This Winter Will Be Like Last

I guess there wasn't much middle ground in the news that morning.

Reminds me of a comic Lisa keeps on our refrigerator: A guy is reading a newspaper. The headline reads "Storm Rips Through Cemetary, 500 Found Dead." The lower caption is "Slow day at the Daily Kazoo."

Like probably most parents in Columbus, we got our advanced tickets for Harry Potter several days ago. I don't know about anyone else, but I've been doing my best to avoid seeing the commercials and all that stuff. Same thing for Lord of the Rings. I find it interesting that there are so many people who actually want to see most of a movie before they can actually see the real thing. I mean, talk about spoiling the fun.

I just went up to get a refill on my caffeine, and Lisa had me read a little blurb in the paper about a guy who tried to sneak 44 birds into a flight from Cuba. He did this by somehow hiding them in his pants. The report doesn't detail how this might actually be accomplished, but I think it's better that way--my imagination can certainly come up with something far better than reality.

     The book progresses well.

Here's a mechanical device you might find useful: As I'm reading along, I'm asking myself a suite of pretty stark questions. Specifically in this case, I'm looking for exposition that gets in the way of the basic flow of the story. When I see things, I try to fix it immediately. Sometimes, however, I'm not sure where to best put the info, so I've been marking these bits in blue text (and tagging them with revision notes) with the intention of going back later and deciding if there are better places in the book to detail the information or not.

The reason this is valuable to me is that I'm not yet to the place in the story where I think it will go. This makes me uncomfortable about putting it there right now, so tagging it this way serves as a marker. When I get to these places, I'll be able to cleanly go back and address all these pesky little questions that are nagging me.
