Back to School

I went to Brigid's school yesterday and gave a talk to 40 or 50 students. We talked about science fiction, and where it came from. I showed them story structure, and used Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice as an example. Sorcerer's Apprentice is about as perfectly a formed short story as there is, by the way, and it's great for using as a classroom example because (1) most people have seen it, and (2) it's really quite short.

I tried to keep it interactive--asking questions as we went and involving the kids. They were really great. Lots of questions came back and they really worked to answer some of mine. I talked about science fiction's history from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to present day. I tried to knit in some of the work they had read. And in the end, we ended with a free-form question and answer segment.

It was a great deal of fun for me. I hope it was at least bearable for them. [grin]

The novel continues forward. I'm "through" with chapter sixteen, but will probably go back and work through the last 5-6 chapters again today just to make sure it's all hanging together right.

Have a great day.
