Crossing Milestones
January 16, 2002
7:13 a.m.

I am the type of person who needs things to be moving along in order to feel comfortable with myself. Deadlines and milestones are my friends. I admit that the past several weeks have been difficult in this category, though. I've been doing a bunch of work, but not seeming to get anything done. Believe me, trying to figure out how XP works is yet another in the string of great ways I've run into that allow me to expend excessive amounts of time for very little in return.

That said, I managed to hit a milestone this morning.

I've finally crossed into the final section of new material I have planned for the book. This is good.

I figure I have some 10,000-15,000 words to put together--looks like the end of January is doable for this draft. I say it that way because I'm figuring I'll have another quick pass at it when this one is over--I've had to fragment my time recently, and I will certainly want to see if the new stuff I've been doing holds together in the big picture.

Still, a milestone's a milestone. Things are moving.

Hope they're moving for you, too.

Tobias put a comment on the sidebar the other day--something about needing to watch out for Brigid's work ethic putting me to shame and all that. He hits closer to the truth than he might think. A couple days ago, she sat down at her computer and banged out a 500 word story in maybe 45 minutes. It's good work. A pretty well fleshed out story with an interesting ending.

This morning we discussed the submittal process.

I told her that she had better not have it accepted first time out, or I'll have to punch her [grin].

     Have a great day.
