The Classics
July 26, 2002 7:15 a.m.
We were driving in the car.

"Is it holding up?" I asked.

"What?" Lisa replied.

"Dune. Is it as good as you remember from before?"

We had both read Dune many, many years ago, and we occasionally go back and read things that aren't as strong now. So I was just wondering.

"Yes. But then, it's a classic. You would expect it would hold up."

"That's true."

"Actually, I think it's even better than before because I'm more knowledgeable about things than I was when we first read them, so I understand more about it."

We went on to discuss Dune's Islamic center, and other various high-level things about the story and plot. We talked about our heightened awareness of cultural elements, especially since the World Trade Center thing. Finally, Lisa said: "I'm just more mature, so I understand references better."

"That's like the Muppet Movie," Brigid piped up from the back.

Needless to say, this association between the Muppet Movie and Dune was cause enough to stop the conversation for that hestitant moment.

"What do you mean?" Lisa asked.

"Well, I was watching it last night for the first time in a long time," our fourteen-year-old said. "And I got a lot more of the references. Like when one of the characters asked another what their position was on inter-species dating."

We snickered at that, but Brigid went on.

"I don't think I understood that the last time I saw it, but I'm older now and I understand things better, so it was really funny."

I gripped the steering wheel. "Well, Brigid, I can't say that I would ever have found a way to associate the Muppet Movie and Dune, but when you put it that way I can understand."

"It was even better when she said that she didn't really know, but that she had dated a lot of rats."

We laughed again.

Have a great day.
