Working Out

The results are in. It appears the "Use More SIJM" proponents are clear 3-0 winners.

As some may remember, I agreed to join a fantasy baseball league this year. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for baseball, and this is a game seemingly designed for me ... at least when it's played with the right frame of mind. Anyway, last night was our major trade deadline.

No, I won't bore you with details.

This relates to the portion of my life that's covered in these pages, however, because while I was hanging around on-line to deal with offers and whatnot, I picked through the book I'm working on. Over the span of four hours on-line I was probably productive in this fashion for an hour and a half, which may not seem like much, but gave me some real progress.

I followed it up this morning with another solid two hours, which I felt was even more focused than normal since I had done more work last night.

Just so you can follow along in the scorebook, I've decided to try an experiment with this book. I've got a draft that I think is publishable, but I think the book can be better. So I copied the old draft and it's safe and sound, and now I'm in the process of totally rewriting a couple of the side characters and changing the focus of the middle of the story. The worst that can happen is that I hate what I do, and so I lose two-three weeks. The best case leaves me with a book that moves faster and sparkles brighter.

I figure that so long as I actually do the work, I can't possibly lose.

So today I smoothed a 40-page section, and I'll try to do a little e more at lunch. Tomorrow and the next day need to include creation of quite a bit of new material. Assuming that goes well, I'll hit my goal of half the book by Friday.

I feel like I've just gone back to the gym. Oh, hello Stairmaster. I remember you. Yeah... legs pumping. Okay. Sweat pooling on the brow. Right. Okay. Breathing getting difficult, but burning so good. Heart rate rising ... cool ... all right.

Let's do it.
