Jekyll & Hyde
August 19, 2002 7:20 a.m.
It was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde weekend.

The good: I finished the short story I was working on, titled (right now) "Incident at Realm City." Overall I kind of like it, though I worry about it a little. It was one that grew from nothing, and when that happens I find I sometimes need a little time to decide whether it's any good or not. I also spent Sunday morning getting my act in gear on the book, and made good progress.

Then the thunderstorms came, and I turned off my PC.

Perhaps it was a stroke of lightning. I don't know.

But despite the weather clearing up, I turned into a sloth that afternoon and did nothing but watch sports on TV.

It's bothering me more this morning than it did last night. I made some more good progress this morning. I like where this is going, and am growing more and more comfortable with my decision to rewrite a chunk of this stuff. I am, however, leaving off at a critical juncture. The largest changes need to come in two separate places, and if I would have worked yesterday I would almost certainly be done with the first section now--leaving me a four week days and a weekend day to finish the second pass.

Don't get me wrong.

I think things will be fine in the end. I think my deadline will be met.

But I should have worked harder yesterday.
