"How's it going?" Lisa asked at dinner last night.

"Pretty good. I'm through all but the last section of the new stuff."

"You wanted to be done with that Friday, right?"

"Yeah, but I'm working hard again, and I made the right overall choices when I skipped out of working on it the last two days."

She looked at me with one of those interesting expressions she gets. It's a gaze that is part understanding and part get that weak excuse out of here. She chewed her food, then finally spoke.

"Do what you have to do."

So at something past 10:00 last night, I finished the new stuff. This morning I started scanning the last part of the book for consistency. I'll do my best to finish that tomorrow, but there's a lot of work there. I like what I've done, though. I think. [grin] I stripped away an entire storyline, pulled another one out so far as to where I could say that it's gone, and built another character to explore more deeply one of the story lines I had just kind of left dangling.

I think it's that last that made me decide to run this experimental pass.

Lisa Silverthorne's been talking a lot about theme lately. When I looked at the book as it stood, I looked the basic story, but I felt like the main point of the story was muddy. Looking at the work, I followed each storyline that provided the energy for this point, and felt in the end that I needed to make the events surrounding it stronger. And part of that was to clear away some of the muck that obscures it a little.

So that's what I've been trying to do--tell the same story, but stronger. I think I ripped out about 25K words a couple weeks ago. I've since put 20K back.

Overall, I fell pretty good right about now.

     Have a great day.
