Day Two
January 3, 2002
6:38 a.m.

Yesterday was my return to several things, specifically including the workplace.

A few things have happened at work since my decline in entries, the chief one being that I'm now involved in overseeing the IT strategy for our global HR systems. I think of it as a reward for all the work that went on in the summer, though other more technical folks are fine if they want to consider it a curse. [grin].

I was in training for the week before Christmas break, and then off the last week and a half. So let's just say that my e-mail folder was brimming.

Day one was a success, though. I made it halfway through a minor rewrite of one of my old stories, pushed a few things at work, took over a second off my time at Zandvoort, and managed to find a little time for Lisa.

Despite being woken by the cat from 1:00 a.m. on, day two is starting off to be just as promising. I finished the rewrite and decided that I still very much like the story. There is no question in my mind that it will one day see print, but there is this matter of finding the right editor at the right time.

That last sentence can be read in several ways. It could be said that it sounds pompous of overbearing, self-important in some ego-inflated way. If you want to take it that way, I can't stop you. But to me that sentence is a marker that tells me something about my progress. There was a time, you see, where I could not say what work of mine was good and what wasn't. Oh, I had my favorite pieces, of course. But when I put them in the mail I couldn't tell you whether I thought they had any chance of being published. Now I do. Or at least, the probabilities are more clear.

This is a good story. It will be published someday, assuming I have patience and persistence. If I have learned one thing about this business it's that it is not for those who thrive on instant gratification.

     What?

You were expecting something earth-shattering on day two?

     Have a great day.
