2:30 Sucks
July 11, 2006 7:21 a.m.
Mornings that start at 2:30 are never good, and this one was no exception.

We have an alarm connected to our basement lift pump that bleats like a herd of annoyed goats whenever it senses the pump is backing up and ready to spew water all over our floor. We also have our water softener set to recharge at half-past two. So this morning, the combination served to rocket Lisa and I out of bed right in the middle of what I'm assuming had been a now long-gone peaceful sleep.

The good news is that the early alarm saved us from waking up to what most certainly would have been abasement full of water. We've done that before, and it's no fun, either. Hence the goat-like alarm. Still, I was not particularly pleased with the events of the evening. I spent the next hour mopping a little water, and kicking the lift pump every now and again to ensure it was working.

Needless to say, I woke up a bit cranky.

I still managed to work on a short story rewrite when I woke up, and in fact discovered another case where I could strengthen an older piece. It feels like I should be working on new stuff, but I continue to revel in the lessons my earlier writing is teaching me. It is so, so easy to see the weaknesses in them now, and honestly, almost as easy to fix them.

Have a great day.
