Scrubbing Inventory
July 19, 2006 6:27 a.m.
We're back from a few days up in Chicago, where we moved Brigid out of, then back into, her dorm room. She's taking the second of a pair of summer courses on Northwestern University's campus, and she wasn't allowed to stay there between them. Poor Brigid and Lisa--they had to spend a day shopping in the big city.

Such are the turmoils of life.

Of course, it's really hot up there these days, and the dorms have no air conditioning, so if you find yourself with nothing to do for a few minutes today, think cool thoughts her way. [grin]

What kind of world to we live in where you can switch channels and go from Morton Anderson reporting on the Israeli offensive to so kid fretting that she won't get the rapper of her dreams to sing at her sweet 16 party?

I'm making progress on several fronts. I've gone through my inventory, and most of what I consider presentable is on editorial desks now, and I've made some logistical progress on Twelve Last Days, the novel I started last December. I've come close to resolving a major stumbling block I ran into then--specifically the fact that I needed an interesting cataclysmic event. I think I've found my disaster.

Nothing makes a skiffy writer happier than figuring out how to destroy the world.

Still some footwork to do here, but that's all part of the game. Though I am creating words, writing is not all about putting your fingers to the keyboard.

Have a great day.
