Sometimes the Answer is Yes Published in the original anthology "Horrors! 365 Scary Stories" -- September, 1998
excerpt:

Johnny Lane struggled in hooded darkness as the ocean closed over his head. Sinking, he held his breath, his lungs bursting, his mind struggling, coming to grips with death. He slowly exhaled, extending the time before he would suck water.

Oh, sweet Jesus! I'll do anything, God. Anything! Just give me a chance to get even with the bitch!

I'm not God, came the reply. But perhaps I can be of assistance.

On Writing "Sometimes the Answer is Yes"

It's 750 words, you know. Pretty danged tiny.

Which, of course, is what they wanted. I decided to write something directly for this anthology merely because it required brevity. Honesty forces me to admit I was really quite pleased with the final result.

I don't do horror as a rule, but when I started I had a small snippet of an opening that I had snatched out of the ether some months before and written into a notebook I keep on my desk. I sorted through the pages of detrious and finally found it. I brainstormed out the plot, sat down, and a mere two hours later I was $35 richer.

Oh, if they all worked that way.
