Halloween Hearts is an anthology of true love & spooky romance; twelve tales of cursed love, monstrous meet-cutes, dark and stormy witchcraft, and happily ever hauntings. You can get your copy just in time for Halloween (and get your name included as a supporter) by backing the project on Kickstarter.
Let’s face it. If you’ve got guts enough to title a story “A Dark, Stormy Night,” you’d better have the chops to pull it off. The phrase is cliché, and as a writer-type, it leaves me thinking about Snoopy. There is, of course, a dog in this story, but his name is Hobbes. Which I immediately love.
Regardless of all that, in this case, “pulling it off” includes Laura Ware giving us Carol, a single mom who is dealing with a depth of problems that include a houseful of kids, the insane logistics of a pre-teen Halloween sleepover, and the dark clouds of a heavy storm threatening on the horizon. And that’s before we get to ….
Well, I won’t spoil it.
Brigid and I decided “A Dark, Stormy Night” is a great piece for this volume—both a love story and a second-chance romance that is a pleasure to watch roll out. It’s also spooky at points, but in a delightful and oddly very deep way (that, again, I Will Not Spoil). And there’s magic in here, too. Or, at least we think there is. That’s just how Laura’s writing can be sometimes. There’s always more going on than meets the eye.
We think you’ll like it.
